The Department of Medical Sciences focuses on educating our students to become skilful and caring health professionals.  With academic excellence, professionalism is a quality expected of any health professional. Attributes of professionalism include showing compassion for patients; demonstrating respect for patients, colleagues, lecturers along with other health care workers; demonstrating responsibility with accountability; punctuality in addition to effective time management; finally the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients as well as peers.

Programme Offerings

Undergraduate Programme

► Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery – 6 Years

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is a highly challenging but extremely rewarding programme that provides the medical knowledge, clinical and research skills, attitudes, awareness and enthusiasm for a vocation in any field of medicine. The learning experience also embarks on how to develop a rapport with patients from a diverse range of cultures – gaining their trust as well as learning how to work effectively with colleagues in other healthcare professions. Teaching and training consists of three years of classroom problem-based learning, with weekly attachments to clinics in the Suva area and three yearsof hospital and community-based training in the disciplines of Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Surgery, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, and Public Health.

Admission Criteria:

  1. A pass in the Fiji Seventh Form Examination (FSFE) or its equivalent, in English plus the best of three science subjects(biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, Information technology), with a minimum aggregate of 300 marks out of 400.
  2. A minimum GPA of 3.5 in the USP Foundation Science programme or its equivalent. Candidates who have completed a BSc should have attained a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  3. Regional students will be considered for admission based on a grade in the SPBEA Form 6 assessment of less than 10, made up of the grades in English and the best of three science subjects; together with Form 7 grades demonstrating an equivalent
    level of achievement.
  4. Candidates from the American-associated Pacific should have graduated from high school in the top 10% of their graduating class, and have completed at least one year of tertiary education, preferably in science subjects.

Postgraduate Programme

The Postgraduate programme in Medical Sciences is offered in two stages so that the level of training can be adjusted to meet the needs of individuals and their work environment.

► Postgraduate Diploma in Anaesthesia – 1 Year

This programme aims to provide competent medical registrars in the anaesthetic perioperative management of common surgical procedures including some emergencies. The programme also
focuses on proficiencyin the early management of severe trauma. General knowledge and practical skills in the safe management of a wide range of patients undergoing anaesthesia for surgery is also
covered. Specifically, it provides knowledge and practical skills as they relate to a Pacific Island non-specialist anaesthetist including the relevant aspects of General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics,
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Intensive Care and Pain Management. Learning will be two-fold both academic and clinical oriented. Each candidate will be employed as a medical registrar in a position approved by the programme.

► Master of Medicine in Anaesthesia – 3 Years

Candidates securing B grade (more than 65%) are considered suitable for enrollment in the Master’s programme. This level aims to further educate doctors to be a clinical specialist in anesthesia.

► Postgraduate Diploma in Internal Medicine – 1 Year

This programme is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of diseases of the internal organs of the body. Specialists in internal medicine are often referred to as physicians, and in addition to undertaking the clinical care of patients also often undertake diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which do not entail surgery and anesthesia. Learning will be two-fold both academic and clinical oriented. Each candidate will be employed as a medical registrar in a position approved by the programme.

► Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine - 3 Years

Candidates securing B grade (more than 65%) are considered suitable for enrollment in the Master’s programme. This programme has been developed as a high quality, locally sustainable programme,
customized to cater for the health needs of the Pacific Region. The programme
recognizes the particular professional roles that are needed in the region and the
physical and financial constraints on the practice of internal medicine.

► Postgraduate Diploma in Surgery – 1 Year

This programme is conducted using the problem- based learning; trainees are expected to participate in discussions and in the management of patients having understood the basics of surgery. Learning will therefore be two-fold both academic and clinical oriented. Each candidate will be employed as a medical registrar in a position approved by the programme.

► Master of Medicine in Surgery – 3 Years

Candidates securing B grade (more than 65%) are considered suitable for enrollment in the Master’s programme. This level aims to further educate doctors to be a clinical specialist in surgery.

► Postgraduate Diploma in Child Health – 1 Year

This programme is suitable for candidates with the aptitude for caring for children. Teaching and learning primarily focuses on the study of prevalent diseases and local epidemiological environment. Ward rounds, on call duties, tutorials, symposia, workshops, supervised sessions and case presentations are the modes of imparting the training. Candidates are placed on call duties under supervision of senior registrars and are expected to acquire proficiency in carrying out the practical procedures and expertise in handling all the modern biomedical gadgetry.

► Master of Medicine in Paediatrics – 3 Years

Candidates securing B grade (more than 65%) are considered suitable for enrollment in the Master’s programme. This level aims to further educate doctors to be a clinical specialist in paediatrics.

► Postgraduate Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology – 1 and half Year

This programme adopts the problem based learning teaching method. Learning will therefore be twofold both academic and clinical oriented. The clinical rotations include the Labour Ward, Antenatal Ward and Clinic, Postnatal
Ward, Maternity ICU, Gynaecology Ward and Clinic, Operating Theatre and Family Planning Clinic.

► Master of Medicine in Obstetrics & Gynaecology – 3 Years

Candidates securing B grade (more than 65%) are considered suitable for enrollment in the Master’s programme. The objective of this programme is to equipt doctors with adequate knowledge, skills and attitudes to practice OBS/GYN as a specialist.

Admission Criteria: (for all the listed postgraduate programmes)

  1. A minimum of two years work experience as a doctor after graduation with an MBBS degree from a recognized institution and with medical registration in Fiji.
  2. Ideally, for the post-graduate clinical programs, one of the two years’ post-MBBS would have consisted practice within the specialty area of study.
  3. For progression to Master in Medicine, at least a ‘B’ grade pass with a minimum of 65% overall mark in the relevant Diploma programme is the pre-requisite. The relevant postgraduate Diploma programme is to be obtained within the previous 3 years of the proposed year of entry (and with medical registration in Fiji).
  4. Good standing/reference from previous/current employer.
  5. A waiver to these pre-requisites can be made in certain circumstances
  6. Letter of study leave or release from current employer.

► Postgraduate Diploma in Mental Health – 1 Year

This programme aims to provide Fiji and the Pacific region with additional human resources trained in mental health. The selection of courses for the programme is geared towards community mental health, rather than an intensive Hospital-based skills development.
As such graduates are equipped with basic knowledge and skills in mental health, mental illness, management strategies, prevention, psychosocial reha-bilitation, counselling and mental health research, which are applicable to communities in Fiji and the Pacific region.

Admission Criteria:

  1. Duly certified papers attesting to completion of the required qualifications (MBBS degree, Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Public Health Nursing or other relevant Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences) from a recognized tertiary institution in the country of origin or overseas and with medical registration in Fiji.
  2. Certificate of good moral character from previous supervisor.
  3. Satisfactory results of general physical examination (signed by appointed medical doctor).
  4. Police clearance

► Postgraduate Diploma in Emergency Medicine – 1 Year

This programme aims to produce competent ‘first-port-of-call’ doctors knowledgeable in the fundamental principles of acute emergency medicine and proficient in relevant practical skills – specifically pertaining to Fiji and the Pacific Region.

Admission Criteria:

  1. Duly certified papers attesting to completion of the required basic medical degree (MBBS or MD) qualifications from recognized tertiary institutions in country of origin.
  2. Medical registration in Fiji.
  3. Certificate of good ethical and moral character from previous supervisors/institutions.
  4. Satisfactory results of general physical examination (signed by appointed medical practitioner).
  5. Police clearance.

Step 2 Apply for a place

Go to www.fnu.ac.fj and download the application form. Complete the application for a place in one of the three programmes of your choice before the closing date and submit for consideration.
Note: In your application be sure to include all relevant documentation. Certified copies of your final examination results NEED to be handed to the CMNHS Academic Office,
Hoodless House, Brown Street, Suva.
Regional / International students will need qualifications assessed by the South Pacific
Board of Educational Assessment [SPBEA].

Step 3 Offer letter

Should your application be successful, your offer letter will be posted to you. Alternatively,
you can pick this up from the CMNHS Academic Office or call [679] 3233305, [679]

Step 4 Accept

Accept offer for study and collect your student ID number. Contact the CMNHS IT Help
Desk [679] 3233010 to activate your student account and password.

Step 5 Registration

Enrol in your chosen courses via the online Student Services system www://application. fnu.ac.fj/CMNHSStudentOnline. Alternatively you can enroll manually at the CMNHS
Academic Office. Pay your compulsory and tuition fees.

Step 6 Orientation

Attend Orientation for your introduction into the College. The faculty will provide you with full enrolment guidance in your welcome pack.
