Message from HOD
Welcome and thank you for browsing this webpage for the Department of Medical Sciences.
Let me share with you as to what we are all about. The Department of Medical Sciences (DMS) comprises the disciplines of Internal Medicine; Surgery; Obstetrics and Gynaecology; Paediatrics; Psychiatry and Anaesthesia. We have a small but international complement of staff that brings a rich mix of skills and cultures into the department. Many of us are from the pacific islands and some are from India, Bangladesh, Australia, USA, Federated State of Micronesia and the Philippines.
Our focus is in educating our students to become skilful and caring health professionals who are dedicated to the region. Our senior academic staffs are all clinicians who spend much of their time in the CWM and Lautoka Hospitals. We also have a pool of problem based learning tutors who have the advantage of working part-time with us doing group tutorials. We work in very close collaboration with the departments of Health Sciences and with Public Health in the delivery of our programs.
The teaching environment is varied to take into account the subject matter at hand. It could be classroom based at our Pasifika Campus; clinically oriented at the CWM Hospital and Lautoka Hospital or community based at the surrounding health centres, subdivisional hospitals and even in the villages.
The school caters for the needs of the pacific region where the lone doctor very quickly becomes a reality so the acquisition of clinical skills and also public health practice has a large focus in all our programs. Notwithstanding that, the breadth and depth of knowledge need to be maintained at the highest level. Our students are mostly from the pacific and they bring to the department a rich variety of cultural assets and promote harmony throughout the region long after they have graduated.
The Fiji School of Medicine offers both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the premier under-graduate program coordinated by the Department of Medical Sciences whilst post-graduate Diploma and Master in Medicine programs are discipline specific.
Entry to the programs is through a selection process based on academic performance and an interview process if necessary. The entry criteria and further program specific information could be found under the various programs. However, should you wish for more information please contact our Administrative Support Staff’s at the department or send an e-mail to either the followings:
Thank you once again for viewing our webpage.
